Help Support the Removal of Parking Ticket Late Fees

The Issue

Historically, individuals who have unpaid parking debt and limited discretionary income rack up late fees on top of the original parking fines. Eventually, these late fees accumulate to the point where an individual with limited discretionary income risks having their driving privileges revoked or suspended, vehicle repossessed, or worse, which in turn can negatively impact an already vulnerable person’s livelihood and ability to work.

About the Bill

Under Int. No. 0885/2023, late fees assessed to parking violations would automatically be waived if a vehicle owner responds to a notice of violation between 45 days and 90 days after the parking ticket was first issued. If passed, this bill would eliminate inequitable late fees for parking violations, which disproportionately impacts vulnerable communities including lower-income New Yorkers and people of color.
